Homophobic Singapore: $10k fine for ‘lesbian’ MTV clip

Cable television operator StarHub CableVision (SCV) has been fined $10,000 for airing a music video that showed two women kissing for about nine seconds–Straits Times, April 10

Why?

The Media Development Authority (MDA) said in a statement on its website yesterday that “romanticised scenes of two girls kissing were shown and it portrayed the relationship as acceptable”

All that in 9 seconds? In other words,

…the clip had promoted lesbianism as “acceptable and romantic”

What we’re talking about here is an imported commercial that was aired twice (Nov 26 & Nov 28 2007) on the Mandarin MTV channel to promote an Olivia Yan album…

Needless to say, MTV was told to stop airing it once ‘the matter was brought to SCV attention by MDA‘ and SCV ‘will work with its content partners to ensure that local broadcasting guidelines are adhered to.

You see why the suicide rate is going up here?

Getting out any way you can makes more sense than living in this (hetero-)fucking country.

  1. that pisses the fuck out of me, pardon my language. fucking janus faced pragmatism that gives us space but takes cannot be visually represented. it’s that dissonance borne from a disjuncture like that that shits us, and then i stand in awe at the power of the media.

    knncbll.
