Individual Professors’ Acadamic Freedom Narrow?

Andy Ho’s piece in today’s Straits Times suggests to me that Thio Li-Ann supporters (or at least that other law lecturer who was once Thio’s student & once worked for Thio’s Mum & is now Thio’s colleague in NUS Law Fac) have been hissy fitting over ST’s coverage of Thio Li-Ann canceling her NYU stint.
I [...]

Ryan Golden on Thio Li-Ann

A comment from Ryan Golden (thank you, Ryan!) which I believe deserves to be more widely read:
I spearheaded the campaign against Thio at NYU, and was quoted in today’s New York Times article. Because pretty much all of my comments were edited out, here is my take on the situation, and the Dean’s response.
This is [...]

Thio Li-Ann cancels on NYU

Citing ‘hostility’ & low enrollment in her classes:
A pity, I think.
I was looking forward to seeing how she came off debating issues in an environment where she can’t threaten to sue anyone who doesn’t agree with her online.
But please note she bailed out on them–
Also please note there was no ‘hostility’ there like that [...]

Surviving/Growing

If main obstacles to growing are
1) dislike of change
2) wanting to stay in comfort zone
(which are both strong in me)
then I should change something/anything in my life/routine daily?
& do something outside my comfort zone?
Right now I’m feeling good positive & healthy but:
I’m out every night this week & all of the coming weekend–
I [...]

3 Interesting Posts

Just found these three comments at InsideHigherEd–haven’t been able (yet) to get permission to post them but I’m putting in a link & my apologies to Ned in advance… Ned I believe they deserve to be read!

Thio Plays Victim Again

Note how she twists his comparison of different marginalizations into an attempt to
incite hatred towards me. As a woman and a person of colour, I find this incredibly offensive.
Please notice too, how this law professor & former Nominated Member of Parliament (who has in a previous email to Jim McCurley invited debate with NYU [...]

Li-Ann Thio replies, wants to meet Jim McCurley face to face

because
I find face to face talks are very effective in disabusing falsehoods and clarifying misapprehension and well, heck, distortions, particularly those redolent with malicious intent.
I hope he & other NYU students take her up on this!
Does anyone else here notice her well, heck, distortions, particularly as her published letters & public speeches are the [...]

Jim McCurley’s Open Letter to Thio Li-Ann

This is a great letter!
An Open Letter to Dr. Thio Li-Ann

I read your recent e-mail interview with Inside Higher Ed with some interest. It seems that [...]

Cary Nelson on Thio Li-Ann

Cary Nelson, national president of the American Association of University Professors, says
it would be legitimate to raise questions about whether she should be teaching human rights.
“Academic freedom protects you from retaliation for your extramural remarks, but it does not protect you from being prohibited from teaching in an area where you are not professionally competent, [...]

Not Not Tonight Honey

Marital Rape is not about sex negotiations in marriage–it’s about long term violence, bullying and abuse.
Outside of a Singapore marriage, rape is punished more severely than physical abuse–inside a Singapore marriage physical abuse is–well–frowned upon when/if -ever it surfaces and marital rape (like lesbians) doesn’t exist.
Talking about marital rape to friends here in Singapore–”What [...]
